現在、葬祭ディレクター技能審査受験対策講座で全国を周っている。
50歳を過ぎて、めでたく老眼になり、移動中（飛行機や新幹線）での読書が辛い。
難しい本や勉強のための読書はコリゴリ、それでも興味のある雑誌には気楽に目を通す。
最近、興味深く読めた記事なので紹介したい。
勿論、葬祭Dとも少しは関係している。
急性灰白髄炎（きゅうせいかいはくずいえん）は、
ポリオウイルスによって発症するウイルス感染症のことだ。
急性灰白髄炎は二類感染症に指定されている…葬祭ディレクター技能審査試験で勉強する。
感染症法によると、一類・二類・三類感染症の病原体に汚染された、
または汚染された疑いのある遺体は、24時間以内の火葬が許可されている。
仮に亡くならなくとも、一類感染症7疾患と二類感染症5疾患は、医療費が公費負担である。
公費負担の内訳は、4分の3を国が、4分の1を県が負担する。
因みに、三塁感染症5疾患だけは自己負担である。
急性灰白髄炎は、二類感染症に指定されているのだ。
時は30年ほど前に遡る。
冷戦下、米ソ両国とその陣営はあわや核戦争かというぎりぎりの局面にいた。
がその頃、米国人にはもっと身近な所にも恐ろしい敵はいたのだ。
その敵とは、ポリオである。
子供と若年成年が多くかかり、小児麻痺とも呼ばれる病気である。
糞便に含まれるウイルスから感染するのは判明していたが、抑制が出来なかった。
散発的な流行が繰り返され、その度に映画館やプールなどの人が集まる施設を閉鎖し、
その流行を封じ込めようとするイタチごっこの繰り返し。
ポリオは中枢神経系を害し、身体障害が残るだけではなく死に至ることもある。
当時のニュース映像には、四肢が歪んだ少年や青年の力なく横たわる姿を映しだし、
見るものを震え上がらせた。
立ち上がったのは、冷戦状態にあった米ソの二人の科学者。
米国のセービンとソ連のチュマコフ。
セービンは、弱毒化されてはいるがまだ生きているポリオウイルス…
それを使ったワクチンを開発した。
そうすることで、注射でワクチンを接種するのではなく、
角砂糖に混ぜて投与したり、スプーンひとさじのシロップとして飲ませたりできる。
（そういえば…昔の記憶が蘇りますなあ）
だから何万人、何万百人もの人々に素早く、安価に、注射針を使用せず投与できるのだ。
更に生ワクチンには、二次免疫を提供するという利点もあった。
ワクチンを投与された子供に別の人が接触すると、
知らず知らずのうちにウイルスに感染し、免疫が付いてしまうのである。
ポリオを地球上から一掃するには、経口生ワクチンが最上である。
簡単な話にして申し訳ないが、
この話に乗ったのがソ連の科学者チュマコフである。
（経緯はカットいたします）
ソ連では、注射による不活性化された（殺された）ワクチン接種が行われていて、
チュマコフが経口ワクチン接種の説得を試みても、所謂、政治局から許可が出ない。
許可しないというその厚生省の決定を拒んだ彼は、
クレムリンの最高幹部だけが使える赤い電話を取り上げた。
大将と繋がった赤電話のお蔭で、1959年（私が生まれた年）、
1000万人の子供たちでテスト投与した。
数か月後、20歳未満の大多数の人がキャンディを通じてワクチン投与。
世界保健機関（WHO）は、1年足らずで麻痺患者のかなりの減少を認めた。
現在、ポリオがまだ深刻な脅威となっている国は、
パキスタン、アフガニスタン、ナイジェリアの一部だけらしい。
地球上からの根絶できる可能性は高い。

人類の営みは何気ないかもしれませんが、
実は先人たちの苦労によって支えられているのです。
健康で生きていられることに感謝しましょう。
葬祭ディレクター技能審査試験でも、
こんな風に興味を引く話から出題されたら面白い。
