叔父を見送りました（加藤直美）

昨年の秋、母の弟を見送りました。
私は、地元で行われた葬儀に参列しました。
父と母はそれぞれに、７人、４人兄第姉妹の長男、長女です。
ですから私には叔父、叔母が、全部で２０人以上はいることになります。
６人がすでに亡くなりました。他は今のところ元気ですが、
その内、見送る機会は多くなるのだろうと覚悟しています。

叔父の納棺は、自宅で行われました。
若い男性スタッフが棺を運んで来ました。
と共に、どこからともなく男性用のコロンの臭い・・・。
まったく「匂い」とは言えないほどのキツイ「臭い」を放っていました。
その臭いに気づいているのは私だけではなく、
叔母たちも「誰？」「誰？」と騒いでいるのには、無理も無いと思いました。
一緒に車で来たスタッフは気付かなかったのでしょうか？
久し振りに、葬儀の中で「あ～あ」というがっかり感を感じました。

葬儀は、数年前に出来た瀟洒な家族葬専門のホールで行われました。
この日は曹洞宗の葬儀でした。
剃髪、授戒、大悲呪、略三宝、十仏名、舎利礼文・・・と、進んで行きました。
司会者は、そこそこ上手な方でした。
言葉の粒立て、間、テンポなど、聞きやすい司会でした。
しかし、二つ目の「あ～あ」が、もう一人の女性スタッフの靴音でした。
スタッフがホール内を歩くと、コツコツコツコツコツコツコツコツ・・・。
その靴音が、式場内に鳴り響くのです。
靴音が目立つホール内で仕事をするスタッフが履くヒールの底は、
「ゴム底」が基本です。
葬送儀礼の中で聞こえるものは「お経」と「すすり泣き」だけで十分です。
私は曹洞宗のお経に興味があって、ＩＣレコーダーで録音をしていました。
後々、この靴音と共に、その時のお経を聞かされています。

そして、最後の「あ～あ」です。
喪主挨拶で前に立った従妹が持つ叔父の遺影は、
こんな持ち方をされて、ガクンと斜めになって・・・
叔父の最期の旅立ちがこんな写真で残ってしまいました。
遺影を持たせるスタッフが、ちゃんとまっすぐに渡してあげないから、
こうなるのです。
曲がっていたらスタッフが駆け寄って直してあげるのが普通でしょう！
ところがこのまま進んだのには驚きでした。
私は思わず出て行って直そうかと思いましたが、
後ろの方で泣いていたのでそれは出来ませんでした。
今でも、悔いが残ります。

この３つの「あ～あ」は、「葬儀」に携わるスタッフが、
何気なくやっていることかも知れません。しかしそれによって、
複雑な（迷惑な）思いをしている人がいることに気づかないと、
いつまでも繰り返すのかも知れませんね・・・。
まったくもって、残念な叔父の葬儀でした。
